Final Reflection

1. What were your expectations for this course and where they met?

My expectations for this course were met and more. I came into this course thinking it would be more along the lines of the history of art, in saying so the course did provide this material of how art came about and where different art styles originated from. Moreover the course went into more detail about certain artist. Also what this course provided that I didn’t think was going to happen was the videos of artists and style. The videos gave a further analysis of what was provided in the book. Furthermore the art gallery visits and online galleries were I believe essential to the learning process of art. With this course upon completion I now have a great knowledge of art and its history.

2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your initial posting?

Art is the perception of the artist through emotion, inspiration and experience. My original post of what art was is along the same lines as what I know believe to be the definition of art according to me. But now after completing the course I have a better knowledge of art and where the emotion is set in in a piece of art along with the inspiration and experience. It has taught me how to analyze a piece of art work better.

3. Who was your favourite artist in your original posting and who is your favourite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favourite artist, why do you think so?

In my original posting Banksy was my favourite artist and still is now. I believe that I have the same artist because of his “I don’t care” attitude but not in a bad way. The type of attitude where Banksy stands up for people and stands up for the right through his art. He's not always right on where he does his art and how but the meaning that he puts into his paintings and passion oozes out of his work.

4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?

I still feel the same about online courses as I did in my original posting. I like them because they are very flexible and easier for me to get my work done with a job and other activities going on. The one downfall to it is having to always check for updates and changes that a professor might post. The adding of work and changing of dates can sometimes be confusing but in the end its a help in doing online courses.

Self-Portraits

Young Knight in a Landscape 1510

Vittore Carpaccio | Museo Thyssen - Bornemisza

The Apparition of Christ to the People (The Apparition of the Messiah)1837 - 1857
Aleksander Ivanov | The State Tretyakov Gallery

Marie-Antoinette de Lorraine-Habsbourg, queen of France, and her children 1787
Louise Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun | Palace of Versailles

1. I went with the theme of “fighting”, but not in the sense of violence but fighting for what you believe in, fighting for the people in your life that you love and aid you and yourself. When you look into a self-portrait of yourself you see your family, which is the biggest fight in you, and you see resemblance of your parents, siblings, grandparents and you fight for them.

2. I choose to try myself with pencil on white paper because I believe it would be easier for me to show my detail and to be I can manipulate using the pencil the best.

3. The biggest challenge that I faced in creating my self-portrait was the details of the eyes and also the light shade of bread that I had. It wasn’t fully grown in but was still there.

4. This isn’t just me, its my family and everything we represent and what we fight for. To be there is a little of everyone of my family in me and that what helps me be motivated and push further and fight.

5. I used the element of shape, color, value. Principles: scale, balance.

6. I did enjoy doing this project, but one thing that I found weird and hard to do was creating the self-portrait. Its the first time that I have ever drawn myself and trying to focus was the hardest part.

7. I like my final work, I believe it could have been better. I think I could have created the shapes of my eyes, head etc, could have been done better to make it more realistic.

curation discussion

1. The theme of my art exhibit was “everyday life”. In life we have many encounters that we must over come from a small thing as a kid called “love” to something much bigger when your older, everyone goes through these things in life. The pieces of art that I choose displayed the everyday encounters that will happen to us during our lifetime that we must face.

2. I choose this theme based on Banksy the artist. He is a political activist and he displays his emotion and love through the art. This helps everyone else better understand him and each other and what they stand for. I choose the title “everyday life” because the artwork he displays and stuff we will go through in our daily lives throughout our lifetime.

3. First one is “follow your dreams”. In life not everyone is going to be supportive of what you do. There is going to be road blocks, detours and toughness but you must overcome it all and follow your dreams to what you want to do with your life. Next is “social media” it has taken over the younger generations lives over the past few years. It needs to stop and this piece of artwork displays what exact happens to people when they don’t have any internet “friends, likes, or comments” its about your daily life not your social media life. Finally “shop till you drop” we are constantly becoming more and more materialistic people rather than us ourselves. It needs to change.

4. It was very tough completing the project because of the artwork and artist I choose to use. Banksys is a graffiti artist that makes art and doesn’t sign it doesn’t date it nor give it a meaning. So trying to do these things was very tough, I couldn’t do it for all of them but I gave it my best shot in finding the proper information.

Reflection:

I learnt a great deal from doing this project. It was a tough challenge not only I curating the art work but finding the proper dates and meanings to each art work. By doing this it helped me look at art from a different angle, like stepping back and viewing a piece. Shapes, colors size texture had more meaning when viewing the piece from this angle.

art visit #2

The temple of the mind (before 1885), by Albert Pinkham Ryder, American, 1847-1917.
- oil on wood
- large gold (french renaissance sort of frame) Baroque style
- during the late 1880s-1890s Albert turned away from traditional pastoral landscape painting in favor of settings surrounded in mystery
- Drew inspiration from the poetry he wrote.

Dunes with ray of light, 1944, American by Lyonel Feininger 1871-1956.
- oil on canvas
- brown frame (simple almost modern)
- Born and raised in NYC, spend his early career in Germany

Le Matin en Provence (morning in provence), 1900-1906, Paul Cezanne, French 1839-1906.
- oil on canvas
- gold antique french style frame
- Painted at the end of his life.

These paintings were apart of the Romantics Landscape Room.

The room had 3 door ways that had marble frame, marble floor, other material was the frames and the art work. There were 5 lights in the Romantics landscape room with all white walls. Three of the art works were located in the corners of the room and the 4th piece of art (which was not documented) was located in the center at the back on the room. The artwork is identified by small plaques located adjacent to the painting. The artworks were 5-10 feet away from each other but in the same room.

Once you enter the museum it gives off a totally different vibe than when you are viewing artwork online or at school. You get into a “zone” were you are very focused on interrupting artwork in a different way and understanding the way artists think and get inspiration from.

I was unable to take pictures at the Albright Bright-Knox so I did some rough sketches of the artworks I chose. Also I did a sketch of the room that all the paintings were located in.

module 11 video review

1. I choose this video mainly because of Picasso, besides Banksy Picasso is my favorite artist, his work is world class, second to none. I believe Picasso is the greatest of all time and had an elegance about him that made him stand out to me. Also I have never heard for Matisse so it was a bonus to learn about him as well. The second video I choose was, the impact for cubism, this is because I really have no idea of what it is and what cubism is, I have a general idea but it was interesting to me after I looked up more background on it,

Matisse and Picasso

- painting and drawing the same but with less materials for drawing
- we’re regarded as the “kings” of art back then
- Matisse-rational painter,explains
- Picasso- didn’t care like Matisse, was just a “regular”
- innocents in their paintings, is what they recognized from each others paintings
- 1912 first collage by Picasso
- Picasso wife inspiration for art but not enjoyable but angry artwork
- Matisse at this time traveling the world
- Picasso doesn’t travel
- Inspiration is life and women for Picasso
- Matisse, painter of women, but need to be there unlike Picasso who doesn’t need them there
- Arbitrater of dreams being a model for Matisse
- Picasso kept painting over paintings and his final painting would be very thick which gave it a different look and elegance
-  Matisse “I go towards my feelings”
- His work he said was a gift for others (matisse)
- Matisse had more confidence than Picasso
- Matisse gets sick and is forced to create art with scissors and cutting out and creating art
- Picasso, paintings- sum of destruction

The impact of Cubism

- Shapes the major part of cubism
- make abstract concrete
- different subject matters changes the paintings
- Angles are very important in creating cubism artwork
- Abstract elements used
- very simple but complex at the same time, ex. patterns, shapes, angles, lines colors etc.

3. The video has more compare and contrast between the two artists. The video gives a further in depth background and information of Matisse and Picasso “rivalry”. For the second video, it was more challenging to comprehend, the book I believe gave a better understand rather than the video. It was more about the paintings of people of cubism rather than cubism itself i believe.
4. In the video they describe each painting and the elements they portray, they also give the background inspiration behind the things the painters did and why they painted certain paintings. Also the travel that the painters do is a major inspiration behind what they do. Also the videos describe the time of painter each artist is and how they developed sometimes into different types of painters, ex. anguish, angry, saddened, joyful etc. This is all based on their life experiences and encounters.

mask

1./2. My first inspiration came from the movie, Phantom of the Opera. It has been one of my all time favorite movies. So it inspired me in my first design to create a mask that had the same principles as that one did. The original mask only covers one eye. The mask protects the man wearing it so his identity is not known. My second inspiration came from another movie, Vendetta. Another one of my all time favorites. The mask is very simple but has a little flare with the facial hair and rosy cheeks. Also the facial features of the mask make it scary but also a little hesitant as it looks like someones up to something. After searching and thinking a lot, my final inspiration for my mask came from batman. The simplicity of the mask is what stands out most to me. It has its features such as the ears but the black, half mask is very simple but still very effective when seen.

4. Color was a huge element used in my drawing of a mark. Black and White because of the simplicity and as well as the cliffhanger on what it could be. There is not a for sure answer to the mask. I also believe the element of value is seen through the mask I drew with the black and white contrast. The principle pattern also, with the black being used twice and to also outline the mask.

5. My final mask I wanted to portray a mixed view and opinion on how the person behind the mask would be. With the simple colors of black and white and really can’t decide on how the person behind the mask would be. It was a fun experience creating a mask that could represent you or what you feel. And I feel like i’m seen different and not everyone has the same opinion on me. It represents me as I always judged by the cover and nothing else and I see this mask as being viewed by the cover and not who’s behind the mask.

3. Like the text this videos start off with background on how these religion were formed and what they are today. In the videos it shows how art and architecture has influenced the religion and also how it has influenced other people and cultures around the world. Also the book explains the art that has inspired a nation and culture.

4. The firms are a great way to show visually how Hinduism and Buddhism are in the places they were created and practiced in. Also it was linked with the book which also helped understanding the video more because it jumped right into the heart of Buddhism and Hinduism.

Art making

1. It was very different and weird to use my hand as a subject matter for drawing. Also it was very hard to draw with my less dominant hand. I’m not very good at drawing with my dominant hand in the first place but it was a good experience to do.

2. I choose pencil, reasoning being is because I just find it easier for me to draw with a pencil rather than charcoal. I believe it just flows better on the paper and easier to correct mistakes and change the drawing.

3. It was very tough for me to create a drawing with my non-dominant hand. As with my dominant hand it flowed very easily but with my non-dominant hand it was like stop go drawing because it just didn’t feel right but nonetheless it was a good experience.

4. I believe both of my drawing were a successful drawing, more the non-dominant hand though just because it is tougher for me to draw with it. It was a great experience though in seeing my abilities with my non-dominant hand.

5. I don’t believe I would create any artwork with my non-dominant hand in the future. But depending on the artwork I was creating it could be a possibility, if I was creating artwork that needed to be really detailed I wouldn’t but if it was different type of artwork that was “messy” then I could maybe use my less dominant hand.

video review, module 9

1. The reason why I chose the videos Albrecht DĂĽrer: Image of a Master and Velázquez because I don’t know anything about them. I have some type of background information on the other videos and people that are in them. Its a great way to learn about these people.

2. Velázquez
- From spain, born in 1599 in Seville, died in 1660
- Life: grey
- Order of Santiago by King
- He “captured the moment”
- only one friend the king
- He painted many paintings of the King, in return he secured his trade as a painter
- After visiting Italy he changed into a “deeper” artist in his art
- Feast of Backus ( one of his great paintings)
- Reality interested Velazquez, painted slowly, lasted years
- Educated painter
- Many of his works based on earlier artists but with his own twists
- Artlessness, nature represents Velazquez
- Velazquez painted people over and over again in different paintings
Albrecht DĂĽrer: Image of a Master
- Born in Germany
- Ideas from Italy after Renaissance
- Drew silver point at 13 years old
- Ageing used in most paintings
- Rarasissim
- After traveling to Italy, he used “landscape” in most paintings
- First true landscape artist in Europe
- Wanted perfect form
- Wood cuts main source of income, still displayed his style through woodcuts
- Prints of Virgin Mary most popular
- Always studying new art
- Made portraits of Maximilius
3. The texts talks about the transition periods and the style of art during those periods and how artists were influenced by earlier styles but put their own twist. The videos I have seen today also talk about the transition and how different things such as travel and earlier artist influence new artists but also gives a further in depth of these people, Velazquez and Albrecht Durer, their background story and how they came about doing what they did and who they influenced down the line.

4. The films don’t give as much information as the text does on the periods such as middle age and Renaissance but it helps you understand, better than the text would, about these individuals and what they meant to the time period they lived in. Both had great influences on art and how it was portrayed.

module 8, video review

1. Explain why you selected the video you choose from the selection listed above.
I choose the video, the measure of all things: Greek art and the human figure, because it caught my attention immediately. The title about human figure and art was what did it for me. After watching the video I was very intrigued through the full video. It was very interesting and eye opening for me, for this people to understand things back in B.C that is still sometimes tough for people to grasp today.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

- All about the human body, obsessed with it
- 3000 BC when it started
- inspired 20th century artists -picasso
- used marble
- mostly women sculptures, connected with fertility
-  6th century started to produce realism, in 3-d, movement
- during point in western art(revolution)
- sole and inner beauty
- statutes that actually make you think they move
- all greek stone in buildings/sculptures were painted, usually in bright colors
- paintings are missing but lots of pottery, depicting everyday life in greece
- Greek dominant culture of the mediterranean, spread across the whole world then

More human than human

- all images/sculptures/paintings etc.  of the body are unrealistic
- north east Austria, statue of woman found, made 25,000 years ago, barely 10cm high, first clue of why world is dominated by unrealistic images of the body.
- exaggerating parts of the body because thats what was liked back then (venus figure)
- Thousands of images of the body in the tomb, of ramesses the 6th
- exaggerating the body was not part of art anymore in Egyptian art
- Egyptian style of creating the image of people/body never changed through generations and centuries
- Grind style is what everyone used in Egyptian style of creating pictures of people/body  and everything of every picture had to be the same and done with precision
- they wanted images of the body to last forever
- culture, society is how we depict the body
- culture is king when depicting the body
- in greece the better body you had the more you were like a god, gods took human form

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Both the readings in the text and the videos relate through how art came out through the image of the body. Each part of the world back then depicted the body in different ways, some inspired by others but with different intentions. The book and the videos go on about how the history of this images back out, also what inspired these images and sculptures, mainly culture.
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I enjoyed both films, I also I watched other one just based on curiosity. These films reiterated what the text had already said but also gave a further depth of understanding about the history of how the image of the body was depicted and also a better understand of how culture had a major impact on the image of the body. Each country, area had a different understand and image of the body based on their society, culture and their beliefs.

module 6 video review

1. I never realized how many different textures and material can be used to make sculptures(piece of art). What really caught my eye was the limestone carving from Italy. The methods they used back in the day and the methods today are very different but are used to have the same results. The buildings they made from these carvings are immense. Glass making is what is the most impressive to me. My family owns many of these pieces of art and to this day I am still amused by them and how they were made. The art of making glass making is very hard process and possess someone with a steady and focused hand.

2. These videos give a further insight on the process of sculptures, glass making and different artworks. The text describes the material and how it is used to make certain artworks with all these different materials. These videos demonstrate the process of how the artwork is made. Going through the steps and history of the material and artwork. Both resources, text and videos, are very insightful and give you better understanding of the process, material and final artwork.

3. I believe the videos were very helpful on giving history and background information on the material and artwork. I believe this helps better understand the process artists going through to create their wonderful pieces of art. It shows the process of getting the material, creating/installing the artwork and the final piece. Its not just a one day thing, these pieces of art go through many thoughts and planning types before they are experimented then created.

Peer review

http://burgesslabria.blogspot.com/?showComment=1394308621337

2. When I was looking from project one and the slideshow that was created with all the picture representing different elements and principles it was great. I did agree with all the elements and principles used for each picture. I believe there was a few pictures that could have represented different elements and principles but the elements and principles used were good. Like I stated in the comment about the slideshow, there was a grace about it, it was very harmonious to go through and view the picture, even the order they were in.

3. When looking through my peers blogs, I didn't recognize any images that I used for my blog. In saying so though there were many pictures that caught my eye and really had an impression on me. After reading what my peers had to say about the image it gave a different point of view on the image then I originally had. It was great to do this to get different perspectives on different images.

4. Like I stated in question 3, there were many images that caught my eye and piqued my interest. A few that had the biggest impression on me were, G. Peter Jemison’s Ansley’s Fishafter reading my peers post about it I agreed that the image was very refreshing, to me it was like a summertime feeling. It changes your mood (happy). After image from the same blog posting was, John Pfhal’s Vaporous Sunrise created by using digital print mounted on Plexiglas with polycarbonate laminate, the image really caught my eye. Its a very relaxing photo. What i'd like to know more about it is the artists inspiration in creating the photo, where he was when he thought about it, if he seen that image then recreated it, and what his intended perspective is on it.

5. I believe that reading your peers posting about blogs and images is very helpful. By doing this it helps you better understand the work and information also it gives you a different view point. I my opinion the most helpful part about it is the different view points on the work. It makes you think in a different way and gives you new ideas for work in the future. Now every time you do a project or posting you have different ways to think about it.

6. There was no posting from the peers on my blog. But I do believe that getting feedback from your peers does help and is useful for when creating a new blog and maybe redoing the one they commented on taking their feedback into consideration

Art visit

a.) The artwork that made the big impact and impression on me was the wall drawing. It is amazing how very few artist took little time a day and penciled in that whole mural. The time and patience it took with a steady hand to create the “electricity” effect is amazing. What also caught my eye was the cubes, rectangles, boxes and containers piece of art. What caught my eye the most out of that was the color scheme used for the boxes and how they sit in each other in different.
b.) Millie Chen wallpaper I had a connection with. With those symbols on the way it makes you think, “what is it trying to say”, what are the symbols saying to me and it always caught me guessing and this is what really caught my eye and connected with me. Anselm Kiefer: beyond landscape I also felt a connection with. Again along the same lines as the wallpaper connection, it was more of a blurry piece of art that had you harmoniously trying to understand where you were in life and what you were trying to achieve.
c.) What artwork I saw briefly and was unable to get the name and I also tried looking it up on the website but I couldn’t find it was the cloth piece of art. It was art made I believe of cloth and I believe was a few people at a market shopping for food. It was very interesting to me. Edgar Degas photo of women looking at their reflection in water, I would like to know what his thought process was behind creating this painting.

BSC soccer logo

1&2. The logo I decided to create was from the name of my blog that I created at the start of the semester for this class. Buffalo state college soccer. In my logo I used the colors black and orange because those are the colors of our school so I thought it would only be fitting to use them, also with black and orange they complement each other. I create a bold B and a regular “S” and “C”. I chose to put the “s” and “c” together to represent a soccer ball and also to represent a circle. Reasoning why is because with a circle there is no ending, you can always achieve more. I also wrote out Buffalo State College soccer out so you could see what the logo represents.

3. I believe the most important discovery I made during the creation of my logo is the circle that does not have an ending and it also represents a ball. I believe that there is never an ending to anything and you can always achieve more.

4. The most important thing I learned after watching the videos, powerpoint and reading material is the colors that you use to create your logo. Color can change someones perspective on it. With colors that attract people, it makes people like the logo more, or the company and what it represents.

Color Theory and Emotional Effects

1. Specific colors can have cultural or individual associations. They can be used symbolically or to set a mood. Colors often have contradictory cultural associations. Examples: Red can symbolize danger and anger, but also joy and love. Yellow color or cowardice or ill health, also summer days. Context provides clues to a color meaning or emotional impact. http://www.mhhe.com/ArtStudio/1/4/1/1.html

2. What most intrigues/ fascinates me about color is how depending on a color it can represent a mood, setting, action. Moreover our society has had an effect on how we see colors as well is what fascinates me more, we have set standards on what colors mean and represent. Green means "go" red means "stop", why couldn't stop signs be brown? Red means love in some situations, valentines day is all red because we made it that way. Yellow is summer... blue is happy. This is what fascinates me the most. We can change our moods based on color, is that just what our body reacts too or we did this as a society? When we wake up and its sunny and cloud free it seems like most of us are happy, but if it was dark and raining our moods would change.

3. Biggest impacts from the video
- use places with different colors that spark imagination
- power of colors on people and what they depict from it
-blue used for virgins robes, colors that were more expensive were used for special things in paintings, this showed the power and emotion behind that color
-intensity of paint depends on how it was made
